STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State University’s Department of Teacher Education and Leadership recently hosted superintendents from across the state for a collaborative training session as part of the East Mississippi Center for Educational Development.

EMCED is located on MSU-Meridian’s campus and serves an educational community of more than 10,000 teachers and administrators in 31 public school districts and one tribal school. The consortium partners with MSU to enhance and improve the effectiveness of educators through high-quality professional development and support services.

Cody Killen, principal at West Lauderdale Middle School, and Zach Bost, superintendent of Kosciusko School District, spoke about making improvements in high performing school districts.

“The consortium is vastly important to teachers and leaders in order to get the professional development we need and best practices,” said Killen. “Being an adjunct professor at MSU has opened my eyes to how MSU is bridging the gap between theory and practice.”

The partnership also strengthens MSU’s programs and relationships with school districts. By networking with EMCED leaders and educators, MSU’s faculty can stay up to date with relevant classroom issues.

“We are preparing students to be future school administrators, so we need to understand the current landscape,” said Leigh Ann McMullan, associate clinical professor of educational leadership. “This is a great way to stay abreast of what’s happening in the schools.”

Ray Morgigno, the executive director of EMCED, shared his enthusiasm about the impact of the mutually beneficial partnership.

“It’s good to be together and learn from each other so we can improve education across the state,” said Morgigno.
